Missing and damaged teeth can cause trouble for you over time. That’s why we recommend being proactive. Without a crown or bridge, empty spaces in your mouth can cause problems with your alignment, gum health, or bite.
If you’re looking for a more permanent fix to replace a missing tooth or strengthen a damaged one, we recommend crowns or bridges.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns can repair or replace damaged or missing teeth. The crown or “cap” will cover the existing tooth. If it is replacing a missing tooth, it will cover an implant given by the dentists at North Bramalea Dental.
A crown may be the best option for you if you want to:
- Protect a weakened tooth
- Restore a damaged tooth
- Cover discolouration
- Cap a poorly shaped tooth or implant
If a crown is the best choice for you, it will usually only take two visits. At the first, we will prep the tooth make an impression of your mouth for sizing. We send the results to a lab where they custom-make a crown. The dentist will place it on your second visit.
Dental Bridges
While crowns can cover existing teeth, bridges are only for replacing missing teeth. Bridges go between two existing teeth covered by crowns. The crowns on either side support the bridge, which covers the missing tooth’s space.
At North Bramalea Dental, we recommend bridges for people who have healthy surrounding teeth to support a bridge. For some, this may be a better option than relying on jaw strength like crowns require.
Dental Crowns vs. Dental Bridges
Both procedures accomplish similar goals but in different ways. A crown will need to cover an existing tooth or implant. Bridges can cover a completely missing tooth but need support from two teeth on either side.
